Larry Lovering is the Oldies Man. Born next to a transistor radio,
Larry listened to the dawn of r
ock
and roll music and drew it into his blood. His first record came in a
basket of chicken (a promotion at the Adventure Car Hop in Saugus,
Massachusetts;) it was "Ramblin' Rose" by Nat King Cole.
His first DJ job was in the basement of his grandfather's home, with 45 RPM records his father bought him. The second was for the public, in a way; broadcasting records over the PA system at his high school before classes began.
In 1978, the Northeast was blanketed by a great blizzard, and Larry trudged through five feet of snow to go to work for station WWON, whose on-air staff was seemingly punch drunk from spending 48 hours together at the station. His volunteer efforts paid off, and by the end of the week, he was hired. Later that decade, WPRO-FM in Providence (the station that reaches the beaches!) put him on the air, and after that, he got into production, forming the Radio Workshop to provide audio services and voice-over narration for radio stations and advertising agencies across America. He also was a filmmaker, taking his documentary to a film festival in the Virgin Islands, and flying back without an award. So, he went back to working for radio once more.
Larry's
voice was heard from Boston to Chicago, and even
more
once cable TV took hold, as Larry's voice was heard on many documentaries.
He also began The Hits of
Yesterday, a successful Live365 oldies
station. But, he itched to make films again, and in 2002, took the Radio
Workshop into television. His skills as a video film maker are for hire,
along with his phenomenal disc jockey skills.
In 2005, Larry relocated from Rhode Island to Connecticut, where his trades are plied in a brand-new studio attached to his home. The Radio Workshop, and its associated enterprises Residence Video, Oldies Productions and Pontiac Group Syndication will all be based in the Quiet Corner of Connecticut.
